Reverse Mortgages Victoria was built on a simple belief: that Australians approaching retirement deserve honest, expert, face-to-face advice from someone who genuinely understands their situation - not a call centre, not a sales script, and not a one-size-fits-all product.

Since 2002, that belief has guided everything we do.

The challenge of a mortgage in retirement

Managing regular loan repayments on a fixed income is a very different proposition to servicing a mortgage during your working years. What was once manageable can gradually become a source of real financial pressure - and real anxiety.

For retirees in this position, the options can feel limited. Drawing down superannuation faster than planned, cutting back on everyday expenses, or simply worrying about how long the money will last are probably not how you envisioned your retirement.

What that usually looks like

Probably not how you envisioned your retirement.

More Australians than ever are entering retirement still carrying a home loan. If that's your situation, you are not alone - and there is a solution worth understanding.

How refinancing works

Refinancing an existing home loan into a reverse mortgage replaces your current mortgage with a facility that requires no regular repayments. The proceeds from the reverse mortgage are used to pay out your existing loan in full, and from that point, no further monthly payments are required.

Interest continues to accrue and compounds over time, with the total balance repaid when the last borrower permanently leaves the property - typically through the sale of the home. The No Negative Equity Guarantee, which has been a legal requirement since 2012, ensures you will never owe more than your home is worth.

The result, for many clients, is an immediate and meaningful improvement in monthly cash flow - freeing up funds for living expenses, healthcare, home maintenance or simply the things that make retirement enjoyable.

What We Believe

After more than two decades in this field, some things have never changed. These are the principles that guide everything we do at Reverse Mortgages Victoria.

Is refinancing right for you?

Refinancing into a reverse mortgage is not the right solution for everyone, and RMV will always assess your full situation before making any recommendation. The key considerations include:

Size of Your Existing Loan

The size of your existing loan relative to your home's value and your age

Age Pension Entitlements

The impact on your age pension entitlements

Long-term Equity Position

Your long-term equity position and estate planning intentions

Assessing Your Repayment

Whether your circumstances - including any future care needs - are best served by removing the repayment obligation now

If refinancing makes sense for your situation, RMV will identify the most suitable product across all six lenders in the Victorian market. If it doesn't, they will tell you that too.

A reverse mortgage is a home loan, as described in both Stages 1 and 2 of the National Consumer Credit Protection Bill. The loan requires no regular repayments during the term of the loan. Mandatory repayments occur when the last remaining borrower no longer lives in the property, typically from sale of property, deceased estate, or moving to alternate accommodation.

Eligible homeowners aged 55 and over can access some of the equity in their home, without selling or moving out. You stay in the home you love, with greater flexibility to live on your own terms.
